DIY Plans - Sample Chapter

Building your own pedal generator or pedal pump can be a rewarding and fun experience. The plans for the Pedal Powered Prime Mover (PPPM) guide you every step of the way. Here is a sample chapter form the plans. This section describes how to manufacture a mounting system for the PPPM that will enable you to attach direct-drive equipment.

Assembling the Lower Mounting System

  1. Lay out the parts you will need as seen in Photo lower_mounting_parts.jpg.

  2. Bolt the two pieces of 90 degree SuperStrut angle iron onto the 25 3/4 inch SuperStrut using the 1/2 inch bolts as seen in Photo powerstrut_angle.jpg.

    1. The bolt heads must be located as shown in the photograph.

    2. Use a washer and lockwasher under the nut.

    3. The installed angles and bolts should appear as in Photo lower_mounting_end.jpg

    4. The bolts should be only finger-tight at this point.

  3. Insert one strut nut into each side rail of the base as seen in Photo strut_nuts_base.jpg.

    1. Make sure the strut nuts are facing the correct way. There are groves on one side of the nuts as seen in Photo grooves.jpg. The grooves on the nut must be facing out - away from the center of the base.

  4. Place the SuperStrut with the angle attached over the bottom of the frame as shown in Photo lower_mount_fit.jpg

    1. Install 3/8 lock washers and bolts through the angles into the strut nuts.

    2. Tighten the bolts firmly.

    3. Now tighten the bolts attaching the angles to the SuperStrut. Using the technique shown in Photo tight_lwr_mnt_end_blts.jpg These bolts must be quite tight.

  5. Place two strut nuts in the newly installed SuperStrut. Insert the remaining 3/8 lockwashers and bolts into the strut nuts as seen in Photo equipment_bolts.jpg These will be used for attaching equipment to the frame.

  6. The Lower Mounting System is complete.
