David Butcher: Watching The World's Energy Use Evolve

The world's use of energy, and the impact of world energy use, is something we should all be concerned about. I am quite interested in current facts and trends, and I have found several sites that help keep me informed. I have looked around quite a bit to find sites that are not obviously presenting overly optimistic or pessimistic information. In support of popular conspiracy theories, however, I have found it somewhat difficult to locate US Government information more recent than 2000-2001, especially trend information showing how the past 4 years have affected environment, energy use and energy prices. For example, if the US increases imports of LNG by 16%/year, how many new LNG tankers must be built each year? How many additional LNG trains must be built each year? How many new LNG ports and gasifiers? For extra credit, what will all of that cost? Wow!

The UK/Continental Europe Gas Pipeline Interconnector Home Page. Fascinating. In the early 2000's the UK was a substantial exporter of natural gas. The tables turned at the end of 2004. This page tells the tale of the gradual reversal of flow - from export (from UK to Europe) to import (from Europe to UK) as the UK gas wells have gradually depleted and slowed production. Now begins the irreversible transition for the UK from seller to buyer, with the corresponding impact on the UK economy. This is another example of what we are facing as the world's petroleum endowment is exhausted.
